Slide-out & leveling troubleshooting

Before you condemn a Schwintek motor or a hydraulic jack pack, prove battery voltage at the controller and follow the manufacturer procedure for your exact system. Wrong manual overrides strip gear racks.

Active corridor: Montana · Wyoming · Idaho · Washington — case-by-case beyond.

Field notes

A huge share of “dead slide” calls are low voltage under load, not a failed motor. Dual-motor in-wall slides can rack when one side is weak. Hydraulic levelers add fluid, valves, sensors, and controller logic. This page is triage — flash-code meanings and crank directions live in the Lippert (or other OEM) sheet for your controller generation, not in an invented matrix here.

Who this is for

Right place if you

Have a slide that stalls, chatters, or will not seal square. Auto-level that errors, leans, or will not retract. Need a safe manual-override mindset before you touch a drill or crank.

Maybe not yet if

You are still choosing a leveling system — see best leveling systems. Seals and water intrusion without motion faults — use roof/seal guides.

Voltage and binding first

Measure at the controller

Chassis/house battery voltage at rest can look fine while voltage collapses when motors start. Measure where the maker says to measure, under attempted operation when safe.

Charge before parts

Bring the bank up and retry before ordering motors. Many “failed” slides wake up on a real charge.

Listen for rack

One side leading on a dual-motor slide binds seals and gears. Stop and diagnose — do not keep hammering the switch.

Level before slides

Extending big slides on a twisted coach invites seal and mechanism pain. Level first when the site allows.

Manual override — only per your manual

In-wall systems and through-frame slides use different override methods (drill on a motor shaft vs hand crank on a gearbox output, depending on design). Disconnect power to the slide circuit before manual operation so a live motor cannot fight you mid-crank. Confirm bit size, direction, and which motor you are turning from the unit’s documentation — generic videos strip racks. If you are unsure, Prefer Text photos of the motor ends and controller before you turn anything.

Photograph codes

Controller error indications vary by generation. Capture them before clearing. Match to the OEM sheet for your system — we will not invent a code table here.

Fluid and leaks

Look under the coach for wet jacks/lines. Fluid type and fill procedure are maker-specific.

Ground support

Jacks on soft ground bury and twist the frame. Use proper pads; auto-level is not magic.

Retract faults

A jack that will not come up can strand you. Do not drag a partially extended jack down the highway.

Owner checklist

  • Identify system brand/generation and keep the PDF aboard
  • Prove battery/charging health before condemning motors
  • Photo LED patterns or screen codes before reset
  • Inspect seals and wiper conditions when the room is open
  • Never pry a slide with improvised leverage
  • Stop and call for help if you smell burning or see bent gear racks

DIY vs book UMRT

Reasonable DIY

Voltage checks, code photos, visual leak/seal inspection, following the OEM override only when you have the right document.

Book us when

Motors disagree, hydraulics leak or fault, or you need a safe retract on the MT · WY · ID · WA corridor. Prefer Text system photos, code shots, and coach year/make.

FAQ

Why won’t you list every flash code?

Controller generations differ. The wrong table is worse than none — use the sheet for your unit.

Can I run the slide off a jump pack?

Sometimes for diagnosis; follow safe connection practice and still fix the charging system. A jump pack is not a battery bank.

What does a visit cost?

Trip $75 within 30 miles then $1.50/mi each way; labor ~$150/hr with 1-hour minimum / 30-minute increments; diagnostic $175 applied if you proceed.

Text first?

Prefer Text (616) 606-5277 — especially before a risky manual override.
